Odorant is a substance added to gas or air in order to give it a specific smell. Odorant injection into the gas flow is performed in odorizing devices and facilitates detection of gas leaks.

The amount of injected odorant is to be such as to provide the concentration of its vapors in gas sufficient for perception by a human with a normal sense of smell. Upon that, the concentration volume is not to exceed 1/5 of the amount of its lower explosion limit. Practically, this amounts to 10 to 30 grams per 1,000 cubic meters of gas and depends on the quality, pressure, temperature of gas, the pipeline condition, its length, gas flow rate, etc.
