Corrosion is the process of metal materials destruction due to their interaction with an external (corrosive) environment. 1 to 1.5 per cent of all metal which is accumulated in the world and involved in people’s activities is annually forfeited as a result of corrosion.

In the gas industry corrosion issues are of special importance due to high metal consumption of equipment and facilities, and due to operation of most of them under gas pressure. Corrosion causes not only high integral metal losses, but, in addition, determines the dangerous level of follow-on destructions in general and environmental impacts in particular. Consequently, indirect damages can be considerably higher.
