Formation is a geological body of a flat shape, with its width much less than its extent area, having uniform features and limited by more or less parallel surfaces: the upper one (top) and the lower one (bottom). Formation may comprise several layers bounded in some ways. The term 'formation' often applies to accumulations of mineral resources (gas, oil, water-bearing formations, etc.).
